Set in Chicago in the jazz age, the musical is based on a 1926 play of the same title by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins, about actual criminals and the crimes on which she reported. The story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and the concept of the “celebrity criminal”. The film went on to win six Academy Awards in 2003, including Best Picture. For her performance, Catherine Zeta-Jones won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, the British Academy Film Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role and the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Supporting Actress. Renee Zellweger won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical and Richard Gere won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.
